Hard Times Cafe arrived in Fredericksburg in 1999 with the opening of the Cafe in the Lee Plaza Shopping Center at the corner of Princess Anne and Jefferson Davis Highway. Glenn Melvin had purchased the franchise rights to the territory from VA 610 to Hampton Roads in Central/Coastal Virginia. After looking for a site for more than a year, Melvin chose the Lee Plaza location and opened in November of 1999.
Melvin’s first Hard Times Cafe was a success, therefore he selected his second site at the Four Mile Fork location and opened the 14,000 sq. ft. restaurant, sports bar and billiard room in October of 2004. Since 2004, the business has evolved. Pool tables have been removed to make room for additional seating. A stage with full production capability was added and now Hard Times Cafe – Four Mile Fork is the largest live music venue in the tri-county area.
“Our goal is to provide a first class sports viewing facility and live entertainment venue that will attract the sports fan and discerning music fan,” said Melvin. National touring music artists such as Saving Abel, Fuel, Alien Ant Farm, and Confederate Railroad have all played the Hard Times stage. “In the future expect to see such acts as Drowning Pool, Saliva, and The Fighting Jamesons performing live at Hard Times Cafe – Four Mile Fork.” For more information visit https://www.facebook.com/HardTimesCafeFourMileFork
